The “Mon Hanthawaddy Period” refers to the powerful Mon-speaking kingdom (Hanthawaddy) that ruled lower Burma (modern-day Myanmar) from 1287 to 1539, with a brief revival from 1550 to 1552. This golden age saw the kingdom become a major center for commerce and the Theravada Buddhist faith, flourishing under gifted monarchs after successfully defending against the rival Kingdom of Ava. It was ultimately conquered by the Taungoo dynasty in the 16th century.
