19thC Wooden Phra Sangkajai sculpture. Finished in gold and lacquer and a really good example of its type. Phra Sangkajai (Sangkachai) was a Buddhist Arhat during the time of Lord Buddha.Phra Sangkajai, He was a fat body monk and looks similar to the Buddha, while Budai is clearly bald, still they were sometimes confused as the other. His figure appears throughout Thai culture and Buddhist temples as a representation of contentment, with both hands in an iconography gesture holding his pot-belly. Buddha praised Phra Sangkajai for his excellence in explaining sophisticated ‘Dharma’ in easily and correctly understandable manner.
