Beautiful 19thC Burmese, Shan Buddha hand carved in hardwood then heavily lacquered and finished in gold leaf. One of the best looking sculptures from this period. Seated in Bhumisparsha Mudra, this symbolizes the Buddha’s enlightenment under the bodhi tree, when he summoned the earth goddess, Sthavara, to bear witness to his attainment of enlightenment. The altar has lost some of its height over the years and has been trimmed to make it level. Some damage to the back of the sculpture where the wood inside has shrunk leaving cracks in the thick lacquer. Its all stable and displays really well. A great looking sculpture at a good price. Once you see it you will be hooked!
