A Fine Antique 17th/18thC Hindu Limestone Carving of Lord Krishna Playing his Flute. It is of rectangular form within a recessed border and carved in high relief with stunning detail, the thickness is larger at the base than the top, this does not show well in the pictures. I have sent pictures to some colleagues in Mumbia and they told me it is rare and very early, it was not Nepalese but Indian. Further research is undergoing and we have been told location; Posably Andhra Pradesh or Karnataka. I have decided to leave the lovely [Neckera Pennata] moss and water it myself. This is almost certainly from an old building demolition or refurbishment. We have just been told this would have been set into the wall of a grand Haveli, many now sadly pulled down and demolished in gready land grabs for building land.
In Hindu tradition, Krishna played his flute (the bansuri) to captivate the hearts of devotees, call souls toward divine love, and tame nature. Symbolically, the hollow flute represents the human heart completely emptied of ego, allowing the divine to flow through and create cosmic harmony.
